A sore throat can be sign of any number of ailments. The most common cause is a cold. Other factors that contribute to throat pain are smoking, pollutants in the air and viral infections. Swelling in the pharynx, tonsils and larynx contribute to the pain. Sore throats can cause difficulty with swallowing, eating and talking.
Many different products can be bought over the counter to relieve throat pain. Some of these medications include cold pills, liquids, throat sprays and lozenges. Many of these products are quite effective but they may include side effects. Cold pills for example can make you dizzy or drowsy and make it hard to concentrate at school or work.
Many effective remedies can be made at home. Most of the ingredients are probably already in your kitchen. In most cases, there is no special equipment needed. The nice thing about making your own cures at home is that you will know what is in them. This is important to many people who are trying to live a more organic life-style.
The simplest way to get rid of a sore throat is to gargle with salt water. Mix four teaspoons salt in one liter of warm water. Gargle with salt water for 20 minutes. Do this before going to bed and your sore throat could be gone by morning.
Another effective way to treat a sore throat is with a warm, soothing drink. Bring one cup water to a boil. Add one teaspoon cumin and two to three cloves of garlic. Reduce heat to low and simmer about one minute. Cool and strain before drinking. This is most effective if drunk while warm.
Licorice has long been used to relieve throat pain. You can try sucking or chewing on a piece of raw licorice. The properties in this herb will bring immediate relief. This is one reason so many cough drops have licorice in them.
For a sore throat that comes from a cold, cinnamon makes an effective remedy. Bring one cup water and 1 tablespoon cinnamon to a boil. Add a pinch of pepper and 2 tablespoons of honey. Allow mixture to cool before drinking. Use the same as any other cough syrup. Mix 2-3 drops of cinnamon oil into one tablespoon of honey and use to coat and relieve throat pain.
Any throat pain that lasts for more than a day or two should be seen by a doctor. This can often be a symptom of a more serious illness. Sore throats caused by a viral infection can become ear or sinus infections if left untreated. Other more serious illnesses to be aware of are thyroid cancer, tonsillitis, strep throat, and swine flu. If your sore throat is accompanied by headache, cough with excessive phlegm or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention right away.
